Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In spoken Finnish, personal pronouns often merge with verbs or disappear entirely, relying on verb endings to convey the subject.

  • Drop the pronoun when the verb ending is unique: 'Minä menen' becomes 'Menen'.
  • Contract pronouns in rapid speech: 'Minä' often becomes 'Mä', 'Sinä' becomes 'Sä'.
  • Attach clitics to the end of words: 'Olenko minä' becomes 'Oonks mä'.
Pronoun (Mä/Sä) + Verb (Shortened) + Clitic (-ks/-han)
