Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Suffixes turn a 'one-and-done' perfective verb into a continuous or repeated imperfective action by stretching the word's ending.
- Add -iva- to prefixed verbs to make them continuous: 'prepisati' (to copy once) becomes 'prepisivati' (to be copying).
- Use -ava- for verbs ending in -ati: 'obećati' (to promise) becomes 'obećavati' (to keep promising).
- Insert -va- for short roots: 'dati' (to give) becomes 'davati' (to give repeatedly/regularly).

Smart Tips
Don't just use the prefixed verb. Add -iva- or -ava- to make it habitual.
Look for the 'A' in the root. If the perfective is 'O', the process is likely 'A'.
Try -iva- first. It is the most 'modern' and productive suffix for new verbs.
Always use the imperfective (derived) verb after 'dok' to set the scene.

Suffix Stress
The stress often shifts to the suffix in derived imperfectives, especially with -iva-.

Story
Ivan was a 'prepisivač'. He didn't just 'prepisati' (copy once) his homework; he was 'prepisivao' (copying) all day long, 'davao' (giving) excuses to his teacher, and 'obećavao' (promising) to stop.

چالش
Look around you and describe 3 things people are doing right now using derived imperfective verbs (e.g., 'On upravo potpisuje račun').
نکات فرهنگی
Standard Croatian strictly distinguishes between perfective and imperfective. Mixing them up is a sign of a non-native speaker.
In some coastal dialects, the infinitive '-ti' is often shortened to '-t'.
Speakers in Zagreb might use the present tense of perfective verbs with 'bum' for future, but still respect aspect in the present.
Derived from Proto-Slavic aspectual suffixes which were used to distinguish between semelfactive (one-time) and iterative (repeated) actions.

It takes practice, but `-iva-` is the most common for prefixed verbs. If the root is one syllable, try `-va-`. If it ends in `-ati`, try `-ava-`.
Only in specific cases like 'future exact' or after certain conjunctions (e.g., `kad`, `ako`). For 'right now', you MUST use the imperfective.
This is due to historical vowel shifts (prijevoj). The 'o' lengthens and becomes 'a' to show the continuous nature of the action.
No. 'Pisati' is just 'to write'. 'Prepisivati' means 'to be copying'. The prefix `pre-` adds the meaning of 'copying'.
Yes, most Slavic languages (like Russian, Polish, Serbian) use very similar suffixation patterns for aspect.
Using the short perfective form (like `dam`) for a habit because it feels simpler. Always remember: habits need the 'stretched' verb.
Rarely. Usually, one aspectual suffix is enough to change the aspect of the entire prefixed verb.
Think of the 'A' as a wide, open sound that represents a 'wide, open' (ongoing) timeframe.
