Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Croatian, short unstressed words (clitics) must always occupy the second position in a sentence or clause, following the first stressed element.

  • Clitics never start a sentence. Correct: 'Vidio sam ga.' Wrong: 'Sam ga vidio.'
  • Follow the 'Clitic Train' order: li > auxiliary > dative > accusative > 'je'.
  • Place clitics immediately after the first word or the first logical phrase.
[Stressed Word/Phrase] + [Clitic Train] + [Rest of Sentence]

💡

The Comma Reset

Every time you see a comma followed by a conjunction like 'da', 'što', or 'ako', the clitic count starts over. Put the clitic right after that conjunction!
⚠️

The 'I' Trap

Don't put a clitic after 'i' (and). It's like 'i' doesn't exist for the clitic. Skip it and put the clitic after the next word.
🎯

The 'Je' Drop

If you use the reflexive 'se' in the past tense, you often drop the 3rd person singular 'je'. Instead of 'On se je umio', just say 'On se umio'.
💬

Emphasis

If you want to sound very dramatic or emphatic, use the long form of the pronoun at the start: 'MENI si to rekao?!' (You said that to ME?!)

Smart Tips

Put the clitic after the whole phrase to sound more natural in modern Croatian.

Taj mi je visoki čovjek rekao. Taj visoki čovjek mi je rekao.

The clitic 'snaps' to 'da' immediately.

Mislim da on je ga vidio. Mislim da ga je on vidio.

Just delete the 'je'. It's almost always dropped.

On se je umio. On se umio.

The order is always Verb + li + other clitics.

No, never in standard Croatian. They must always follow a stressed word or phrase.

You follow the order: `li` -> `auxiliary` -> `dative` -> `accusative`. For example: `Dali li su mu ga?`

To avoid the awkward repetition of the sound 'je'. 'Ju' is an alternative form of the accusative 'her'.

It can be both! `Moj brat mi je rekao` (phrase) and `Moj mi je brat rekao` (word) are both correct, but the phrase version is more common today.

Yes, but it's a proclitic. It goes *before* the verb and carries the stress: `Ne vidim`.

No. A clitic cannot follow a comma directly if there is a pause. It must follow the first stressed word *after* the comma.

The short form of 'biti' (sam, si, je...) is always a clitic. The word 'sam' meaning 'alone' is a regular adjective and is stressed.

Usually, it's the first noun, verb, or pronoun in the sentence. Conjunctions like 'i' and 'ali' don't count.
