Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Croatian, short unstressed words (clitics) must always occupy the second position in a sentence or clause, following the first stressed element.
- Clitics never start a sentence. Correct: 'Vidio sam ga.' Wrong: 'Sam ga vidio.'
- Follow the 'Clitic Train' order: li > auxiliary > dative > accusative > 'je'.
- Place clitics immediately after the first word or the first logical phrase.
Meanings

Smart Tips
Put the clitic after the whole phrase to sound more natural in modern Croatian.
The clitic 'snaps' to 'da' immediately.
Just delete the 'je'. It's almost always dropped.
The order is always Verb + li + other clitics.

Enclitic Leaning

Proclitic 'ne'
The negative 'ne' is a proclitic (leans forward) and carries the stress.

Mnemonic

Visual Association

Story

تحدٍّ
Look at any Croatian news article. Circle the first word of 5 sentences and see if a clitic follows it. If not, find where the clitic is hiding!
ملاحظات ثقافية
Strictly follows the second-position rule in all formal media and education.
Speakers sometimes place clitics more flexibly, occasionally starting sentences with 'bum' (short for 'budem').
Often drops the final 'i' in clitics like 'mi' or 'ti' in very fast speech, though the position remains the same.
Clitic placement in Croatian is a direct inheritance from Proto-Indo-European, specifically following Wackernagel's Law.

No, never in standard Croatian. They must always follow a stressed word or phrase.
You follow the order: `li` -> `auxiliary` -> `dative` -> `accusative`. For example: `Dali li su mu ga?`
To avoid the awkward repetition of the sound 'je'. 'Ju' is an alternative form of the accusative 'her'.
It can be both! `Moj brat mi je rekao` (phrase) and `Moj mi je brat rekao` (word) are both correct, but the phrase version is more common today.
Yes, but it's a proclitic. It goes *before* the verb and carries the stress: `Ne vidim`.
No. A clitic cannot follow a comma directly if there is a pause. It must follow the first stressed word *after* the comma.
The short form of 'biti' (sam, si, je...) is always a clitic. The word 'sam' meaning 'alone' is a regular adjective and is stressed.
Usually, it's the first noun, verb, or pronoun in the sentence. Conjunctions like 'i' and 'ali' don't count.
