Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Khmer, you don't just use 'I' or 'you'; you use family titles like 'Bong' (older sibling) or 'Oun' (younger sibling) to show respect.

  • Use 'Bong' for someone older or in a higher social position: 'Bong sok sabay te?' (Are you well?)
  • Use 'Oun' for someone younger or in a lower social position: 'Oun tov na?' (Where are you going?)
  • Use 'Khnhom' as a neutral 'I' when you are unsure of the social hierarchy.
