Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Malayalam uses 'matras' (vowel signs) attached to consonants to create syllables, replacing the standalone vowel form.

  • Standalone vowels like 'അ' (a) change shape when attached to a consonant like 'ക' (ka) to become 'ക' (ka).
  • Some vowels like 'ഇ' (i) move to the left of the consonant: 'കി' (ki).
  • Others like 'ഉ' (u) attach below the consonant: 'കു' (ku).
Consonant + Vowel Sign = Syllable (e.g., ക + ി = കി)
