The word kan is one of the most useful verbs in Swedish. It is a modal verb, which means it 'modifies' the meaning of another verb. In Swedish, kan is used for both ability (I have the skill) and possibility (it is possible).
Unlike English, where you might switch between 'can' and 'might', Swedish uses kan for both. This makes it very easy to learn! When you use kan, you are telling the listener about your potential or your skills.
It is the foundation for expressing what you are capable of in your new language. Whether you are talking about hobbies, work skills, or the weather, kan will be your best friend. It is invariant, meaning it doesn't change regardless of who the subject is.
Whether it is 'I', 'you', or 'they', it is always kan.
## How to Form It
Forming sentences with kan is incredibly simple. You place kan directly after the subject, followed by the main verb in its infinitive form.
Affirmative: Jag kan simma. (I can swim.)
Negative: Jag kan inte simma. (I cannot swim.)
Question: Kan du simma? (Can you swim?)
Notice that the second verb (the main action) never takes an 'att' (to) before it. You simply say kan + verb. This is a major difference from English, where we say 'I can to swim' (incorrect) but 'I want to swim' (correct). In Swedish, kan is a shortcut that skips the 'att'.
## When to Use It
You will use kan constantly in daily life. In a job interview, you say 'Jag kan svenska' (I know Swedish). When ordering food, you might ask 'Kan jag få en kaffe?' (Can I have a coffee?).
On social media, you might write 'Det kan bli kul!' (It could be fun!). When traveling, you use it to ask for help: 'Kan du hjälpa mig?' (Can you help me?). It is the go-to verb for navigating social interactions and expressing your needs.
## Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is adding 'att' before the main verb. Learners often think 'I can to swim' translates to 'Jag kan att simma'. This is wrong!
Always drop the 'att'. Another mistake is trying to conjugate kan. It is the same for all persons (jag, du, han, hon, vi, ni, de).
Don't try to make it 'kanner' or 'kannar'. Just keep it kan.
## How It's Different From...
Learners often confuse kan with vet. Kan is for skills and abilities (I know how to do something). Vet is for facts (I know a piece of information).
If you know how to play chess, you use kan. If you know the rules of chess, you use vet. Think of kan as 'can/know how' and vet as 'know (a fact)'.
