Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Swahili, when you make a verb negative, the final vowel '-a' often changes to '-i'.

  • Most verbs ending in -a change to -i in the negative: 'nasoma' (I read) becomes 'sisomi' (I don't read).
  • Verbs ending in -e, -i, or -u usually stay the same: 'nasamehe' (I forgive) becomes 'sisamehe'.
  • The negative prefix 'si-' is added to the beginning of the verb for the first person singular.
