Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the -in suffix when the object of your sentence is the main focus or the receiver of the action.
- Add -in to the root verb if it ends in a consonant: kain -> kainin.
- Add -hin to the root verb if it ends in a vowel: basa -> basahin.
- The object becomes the grammatical focus (the 'ang' phrase) of the sentence.
Meanings
The -in focus marks the direct object as the topic of the sentence, emphasizing what is being acted upon rather than who is doing the action.
Direct Object Focus
Used when the speaker wants to highlight the specific object being affected by the action.
“Basahin mo ang libro.”
“Kunin mo ang susi.”
