Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The Jazm (or Sukūn) is a small circle ( ْ ) placed above a letter to indicate that it has no vowel sound.

  • Place the Jazm above a consonant to stop the vowel flow (e.g., 'ب' becomes 'b' instead of 'ba').
  • Use it to connect two syllables within a word (e.g., 'گھر' - the 'ر' is silent).
  • It never starts a word because a word must begin with a vowel-carrying consonant.
Consonant + ْ = Silent Stop
