The grammar is super simple. You usually put the person doing the teaching first. Then comes 教, followed by the person learning. Finally, add the subject or skill. For example: 'He teaches me Chinese.' It feels very direct and active. You can also use it for quick favors. Like asking someone to show you a recipe. It’s a versatile verb for any skill transfer.

Use it in classrooms, obviously. But also use it when you're hanging out with friends. If a friend is great at a video game, ask them to 教 you. Use it at work when a colleague shows you the ropes. It’s perfect for hobbies like cooking, sports, or music. It sounds helpful and collaborative in these settings.

Don't use 教 if you are just 'telling' someone a piece of news. That would be 告诉 (gàosu). Also, avoid using it if you're just 'giving advice' without a skill involved. If you're lecturing someone in a mean way, be careful. Using 教 can sometimes sound like you're acting superior. Use a softer tone if you're just suggesting something.

In Chinese culture, the role of a teacher is deeply respected. This stems from Confucian values where education is everything. The character 教 actually combines 'filial piety' and 'to tap/hit.' Historically, it suggested that discipline was part of learning! Today, it’s much friendlier. But that weight of 'passing on the torch' still exists in the word.

You’ll often see it as 教书 (jiāoshū), which literally means 'teaching books.' This specifically refers to the profession of being a teacher. Another common one is 请教 (qǐngjiào). This is a polite way to say 'please teach me' or 'I seek your advice.' It’s great for making a good impression on a boss or elder.
