You use it exactly like the English 'Good night.' It is almost always the very last thing you say. You can say it in person as you head to your bedroom. You can also send it as a final text message. In China, it is very common to send just the two characters 晚安. Sometimes people add a cute moon or sleeping emoji. It is a complete sentence on its own. You do not need to add anything else to make it work.

Use it when you are actually about to sleep. It is perfect for saying goodbye to family at home. It is great for ending a late-night chat with a crush. Use it with friends when leaving a late dinner. If you are staying at a hotel, you can say it to the staff. It works whenever the next step for everyone involved is sleep. It signals that the day's social interactions are officially over.

Do not use 晚安 as a greeting. If you meet someone at 8:00 PM, do not say 晚安. That would be like saying 'Goodbye' the moment you see them! Use 晚上好 (wǎnshàng hǎo) for 'Good evening' instead. Also, avoid using it in middle-of-the-day naps. It is specifically for the 'big sleep' at night. Using it in a serious business meeting might feel a bit too intimate or soft. Stick to more formal departures there unless you are very close.

In ancient China, wishing someone 'peace' at night was a genuine blessing. Nights were dark and sometimes dangerous. Today, it has a very sweet, caring connotation. Among young couples, saying 晚安 every single night is a big deal. It shows consistency and affection. There is even a popular internet saying that wǎn'ān sounds like the initials for 'Wo Ai Ni, Ai Ni' (I love you, love you). It has become a digital hug for the modern age.

If you want to sound extra cute, you can say 安安 (ān'ān). This is very popular in Taiwan and among Gen Z. For a more 'sweet dreams' vibe, try 好梦 (hǎo mèng). If you are talking to a child, you might say 乖乖睡觉 (guāiguāi shuìjiào). This means 'sleep well, little one.' But for 99% of situations, the classic 晚安 is your best friend. It is timeless, polite, and always appropriate.
