Out of all the traits that differentiate humans from other creatures, language is probably the strangest.

00:11

As far as modern science is concerned, there is no other creature that communicates like humans!

00:15

Lots of animals can communicate with each other using body movement and noises.

00:19

Buut there is no other animal that can tell his species about something that happened in the past

00:24

Or evoke wisdoms and stories to them.

00:26

No other animal can say "Rest in peace father, O you were a wise man and you taught us respect and morals"

00:33

No no no! This is something only humans do

00:36

Some people tried to teach primates and birds some signs and some words

00:39

But in the end, their level in communication was only comparable to that of a small child's.

00:44

which is quite embarrassing because children are errrrr, little angels!

00:48

Forming sentences, sharing news, choosing words. and gossiping

00:53

...are all actions exclusive to humans as it appears.

00:57

But why do our languages differ?

00:59

This is something we've all asked ourselves once.

01:03

I mean, we're all the same species, our brains work the same, our organs all work the same...

01:10

...so why did our tongues decided to utter different letters in each part of the world?

01:15

Why don't all humans speak the same language?

01:19

CHAPTER ONE: What Is a Language?

01:21

To be able to understand what language is, we have to define language first.

01:26

The definition of language is easy, right?

01:27

Language is the way people speak!

01:29

Nouns, verbs, sentences, writing and letters.

01:32

(4 Arabic letters)

01:33

EFG!

01:37

THIS is language.

01:40

Right?

01:41

Ehhhh, not quite.

01:42

All these things describe a language, but they are not the language itself.

01:48

For example,

01:49

not all languages have a writing system like Arabic or English

01:52

We as educated and literate people,

01:55

when we think of language we think of something like this, or this or this.

02:02

Egh

02:02

But in reality, writing comes in a very late stage of a language's life.

02:07

There currently around 5000 languages in the world, and only around 200 of them have reading and writing systems.

02:14

So writing and reading and all these beautiful things only represent language

02:18

But they are not the language itself.

02:21

And you can't just say that a language is ONLY words.

02:23

You can grab an English dictionary and memorize all it contains.

02:27

But you can't come up with a single correct sentence if you know nothing but the words.

02:38

No, no!

02:39

A language is words and grammar.

02:42

This is the simplest definition of language you will ever see.

02:45

"Ahmed went to school"

02:46

The words are: Ahmed, went, to and school.

02:49

The grammar is: (Hussein procceeds to explain complicated Arabic grammar.)

03:13

THIS. Is language.

03:14

The words give us meanings, and the grammar alters those words to form sentences.

03:20

Each language has its' own words and rule sets

03:24

This isn't something that's unique to the Arabic language.

03:26

Anyone who studied another language knows how much pain learning a whole new ruleset is.

03:35

But to be honest, not only languages themselves, but even dialect have their own words and rulesets.

03:41

Your own dialect, the one you speak at home, might have it's own rules that are a wee bit different from formal Arabic

03:49

Pay attention to how your family speaks at home and you'll find that they constructs their sentences is a very specific way.

03:55

(Hussein compares the words "How are you?" in different arabic dialects)

04:00

Same question, same words, but the slight difference in grammar changes the words' relation with each other

04:06

Humans are designed this way.

04:08

We don't throw around random words and hope to god that the other person understands.

04:12

No.

04:13

Your tongue forces you to arrange words according to a certain ruleset.

04:16

Even though you might not exactly know the exact grammar of your language, your brain an insane ability to detect when they are broken.

04:24

If you hear someone say "This is awesome car"

04:27

Instantly,

04:28

unconsciously

04:30

You notice the error.

04:32

Your mind knows that there needs to be 'an' in front of 'Awesome'

04:35

The sentence is supposed to be: "This is AN awesome car."

04:40

Maybe you don't know exactly why the words are arranged like this and how the grammar works.

04:46

But your brain just knows the rhythm of language.

04:48

So always remember; language is words and grammar.

04:53

SECOND CHAPTER: Linguistic Families.

04:56

Lots of languages around the world are very similar when it comes to words and grammar.

05:00

For example; Arabic and Hebrew.
