The Importance of Thumbnails

Thumbnails are super important, guys.

00:02

And I’m not talking about the ones

00:04

that entice you to click on our videos.

00:06

I’m talking about these thumbnails.

00:08

Because when you’re an animal with thumbs,

00:10

sometimes claws just won’t do.

00:12

And some animals only have nails on their thumbs,

00:15

because they’re just that helpful.

00:17

But exactly how you and I  started growing thumbnails,

00:20

or any nails really, is still a mystery.

00:23

So let’s dive into what  scientists have uncovered so far.

00:26

[INTRO]

00:29

Let’s start with a bit of Nail 101.

00:31

The Latin name for a nail is an ungula.

00:34

Not to be confused with unguis,

00:36

the general term for any kind of  thing protruding out of the digits:

00:39

claw, hoof, nail, et cetera.

00:41

And claws, nails, and hooves  do all share some basic parts.

00:45

For example, they all contain  a protein called keratin,

00:48

which gives them their toughness.

00:49

But nails are unique

00:50

because they feature a flat  plate of keratinized skin

00:53

that sits on top of a digit and  then kind of juts out from there.

00:57

Hooves are a little special in their own way,

00:59

because most of the animal’s  weight is bearing down on them.

01:02

Because of that, the plate grows at an angle

01:04

and wraps around most of the tip of the digit.

01:07

It also means the keratinized  bit has to be thicker.

01:10

And claws?

01:10

Well, if you’ve ever been unfortunate enough

01:12

to be at the receiving end of a cat swipe,

01:14

you’ll know they’re longer,  and more compressed than nails.

01:17

For the purpose of this video,

01:18

we’re going to stick to just nails and claws…

01:21

which thanks to their different forms,  are better suited for different tasks.

01:25

For example, since they’re pointy,

01:26

claws are great for grabbing a thing

01:28

and helping that thing rest  in the hand…paw…whatever.
