Poser des Questions: Do et Does (Questions au Présent Simple)

Lance des conversations en utilisant do et does pour parler habitudes et vérifier faits.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'Do' or 'Does' at the start of a sentence to turn a statement into a question.

  • Use 'Do' for I, you, we, and they. Example: 'Do you like coffee?'
  • Use 'Does' for he, she, and it. Example: 'Does she like coffee?'
  • When using 'Does', the main verb loses its 's'. Example: 'Does he work?' (not works).
❓ Do/Does + Subject + Verb (Base) + ?

Overview

Vous êtes-vous déjà demandé pourquoi on ne peut pas simplement dire You like coffee? avec une intonation montante ? Eh bien, en anglais, nous adorons nos petits assistants. Ces assistants sont appelés verbes auxiliaires.
Pour le Present Simple, nos meilleurs amis sont do et does. Ils agissent comme les clés qui déverrouillent la porte de la question. Sans eux, votre phrase n'est qu'une simple affirmation.
Considérez do et does comme le signal de question pour votre interlocuteur. Ils disent à votre ami :
Hé, je pose une question !
dès le début.

How This Grammar Works

Ainsi, cela devient Does he like Netflix?. Vous voyez comment like a perdu son s ?
C'est comme si does lui avait volé son sac à dos.

Formation Pattern

1
Créer ces questions, c'est comme suivre une recette simple. Il suffit de mettre les ingrédients dans le bon ordre.
2
Commencez par votre auxiliaire : Do ou Does.
3
Ajoutez la personne : Le sujet (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).
4
Ajoutez l'action : Le verbe de base (pas de -s, pas de -ing).
5
Terminez l'idée : Le reste de la phrase.

When To Use It

Utilisez cette structure quand vous voulez en savoir plus sur la réalité ou la routine de quelqu'un. Vous passez un entretien sur Zoom ? Utilisez Do you work well in teams?.
Vous textez un nouvel ami ? Utilisez Do you listen to Billie Eilish?. C'est parfait pour découvrir si quelqu'un a une habitude spécifique.

Common Mistakes

Le plus grand piège est l'erreur du Double S. On dit souvent Does he likes pizza?. C'est faux ! Rappelez-vous que does a déjà le s. Une autre erreur courante est d'oublier complètement l'auxiliaire. You speak English? passe par SMS, mais dans une vraie conversation, cela semble inachevé.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Ne confondez pas cela avec le verbe to be (am/is/are). On utilise Are you...? pour des descriptions, comme Are you tired?. On utilise Do you...? pour des actions. Vous ne diriez pas Do you tired?.

Quick FAQ

💡

La règle de la forme de base du verbe

Toujours, toujours, *toujours* utiliser la forme de base du verbe principal après 'do' ou 'does'. Le verbe auxiliaire 'do'/'does' porte déjà l'information sur le temps et le sujet, donc le verbe principal reste simple. C'est comme une équipe : 'do'/'does' est le capitaine, et le verbe principal est la star qui n'a qu'à se présenter !
Does he work here?
⚠️

Évite la confusion avec 'To Be'

N'utilise jamais 'do' ou 'does' avec le verbe 'to be' (am, is, are). Ces verbes sont spéciaux et forment des questions en se déplaçant simplement au début de la phrase. Par exemple, dis Are you happy? et non
Do you are happy?
. C'est une erreur de débutant très courante !
🎯

Les réponses courtes sont tes amies

Maîtriser les réponses courtes comme Yes, I do. / "No, I don't. ou Yes, she does.« / »No, she doesn't." rendra ton anglais beaucoup plus naturel et fluide. Elles sont rapides, polies et très courantes dans la conversation de tous les jours. N'aie pas toujours l'impression de devoir faire une phrase complète !
Do you like coffee? Yes, I do.
🌍

L'intonation compte

En anglais, les questions 'oui/non' utilisant 'do' ou 'does' ont généralement une intonation montante à la fin. Cela aide à signaler à ton interlocuteur que tu poses une question et que tu attends une réponse oui ou non. Entraîne-toi à dire
Do you like pizza?
avec une légère montée de ton à la fin.
💡

Pense au 'S' pour 'Does'

Si tu as du mal à te souvenir quand utiliser 'does', pense simplement au 's' à la fin de 'does'. C'est un petit rappel que 'does' est pour les sujets singuliers : he, she, it. Si ton sujet peut être remplacé par l'un d'eux, utilise 'does' !
Does she speak French?

Smart Tips

Stop! Remember the 'S' is a traveler. It moved from 'like' to 'do' to make 'does'. It can't be in two places.

Does he likes pizza? Does he like pizza?

Look for an action. If there's an action (run, eat, think), use 'Do'. If not, use 'Are'.

Do you happy? Are you happy?

Echo the auxiliary. If the question starts with 'Do', answer with 'do'. If it starts with 'Does', answer with 'does'.

Does she like it? Yes, she do. Does she like it? Yes, she does.

Always use 'Do you have' instead of 'Have you'. It works in every English-speaking country.

Have you a pen? Do you have a pen?

Prononciation

Reduction of 'Do you'

In fast speech, 'Do you' often sounds like 'D'ya' or 'Dju'.

/dʌzi/

Does he/she reduction

The 'h' in 'he' or 'she' is often dropped. 'Does he' sounds like 'Duz-ee'.

Rising Intonation

Do you like it? ↗

Standard Yes/No questions usually end with a rising pitch.

Falling Intonation

Wh- questions usually end with a falling pitch.

Association visuelle

Imagine the letter 'S' jumping off the main verb (like 'plays') and landing on the word 'Do' to make it 'Does'. Once the 'S' has moved, it can't be in two places at once!

Rhyme

I, you, we, they — 'Do' is what we say. He, she, it — 'Does' is the perfect fit.

Story

The verb 'Do' is a helpful assistant. When a sentence wants to become a question, 'Do' steps in to help. But when 'He', 'She', or 'It' are around, they are very demanding, so 'Do' has to put on a special 'S' hat and become 'Does' to make them happy.

In very informal British English, you might hear 'Have you got...?' instead of 'Do you have...?' for possession.

Americans almost exclusively use 'Do you have...?' for possession in both formal and informal contexts.

You might hear 'Do y'all...?' when addressing a group of people.

The use of 'do' as an auxiliary (Do-support) emerged in Middle English but became standard in the 16th and 17th centuries.

FAQ (8)

In very casual speech, yes (e.g., 'You like it?'), but in writing and formal speaking, you must use `do` or `does`.

Because `does` already shows the third-person 's'. The main verb must always return to its base form, which is `have`.

No. Never use `do` with `am`, `is`, or `are`. Say 'Are you okay?' not 'Do you be okay?'

`Do you have` is standard American English. `Have you got` is common in British English. Both mean the same thing.

If 'Who' is the subject, don't use 'do' (e.g., 'Who wants cake?'). If 'Who' is the object, use 'do' (e.g., 'Who do you like?').

Yes! We use `does` for `it` (the machine) and the base verb `work`.

No. Modal verbs like `can`, `should`, and `must` do not use `do`. Just say 'Can you help me?'

Instead of just saying 'Yes', we say 'Yes, I do' or 'Yes, she does'. It sounds more polite and natural.
