In the Gulf, especially during Ramadan, the entire schedule shifts. People stay up until Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and then 'yastayqiẓūna muta’akhkhiran' (wake up late) in the afternoon. This is culturally standard during the holy month. Cairo is 'the city that never sleeps.' Because social life peaks at midnight, waking up late is very common for students and young professionals. The term 'Sahra' is the reason behind the late waking. The morning coffee (Ahwa) is a ritual. Even if someone wakes up late, the first thing they do is 'yashrab al-ahwa' (drink coffee). Waking up late on a Sunday after a long family lunch or dinner is a cherished tradition. In Morocco, the concept of time can be more fluid. Waking up late might be described with French-influenced terms, but the Arabic root remains the base for formal communication.
