It's a reflexive verb, so it always uses a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous, se) before the verb.
Je **me** suis étonné. (I was surprised.)
In the passé composé, it uses the auxiliary verb 'être' (to be), not 'avoir'.
Tu **t'es** étonné. (You were surprised.)
When followed by a subordinate clause (a clause starting with 'que'), the subjunctive mood is often used if the surprise is strong or subjective.
Il s'étonne **que** tu sois là. (He's surprised that you are here.)
It can be followed by 'de' + infinitive or 'de' + noun to indicate the cause of the surprise.
Elle s'étonne **de** son succès. (She's surprised by his success.)
The verb can also be used in an impersonal way with 'il' (it), meaning 'it's surprising'.
