Choosing Imperfective vs. Perfective in Past Tense (Perfekt)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use perfective verbs for completed, one-time actions and imperfective verbs for ongoing, repeated, or habitual actions in the past.

  • Perfective: Use for a single, finished event. Example: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I read the book).
  • Imperfective: Use for ongoing or repeated actions. Example: 'Čitao sam knjigu' (I was reading the book).
  • Aspectual Pairs: Most verbs come in pairs (e.g., kupovati vs. kupiti).
Perfective (Done!) vs Imperfective (Doing...)

Meanings

Croatian verbs are categorized by aspect, which describes the internal temporal structure of an action rather than just the time it occurred.

1

Completed Action

Focuses on the result or the completion of an event.

“Popio sam kavu.”

“Kupio sam kruh.”

2

Ongoing/Habitual Action

Focuses on the process, duration, or repetition of an action.
