Choosing Imperfective vs. Perfective in Past Tense (Perfekt)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use perfective verbs for completed, one-time actions and imperfective verbs for ongoing, repeated, or habitual actions in the past.
- Perfective: Use for a single, finished event. Example: 'Pročitao sam knjigu' (I read the book).
- Imperfective: Use for ongoing or repeated actions. Example: 'Čitao sam knjigu' (I was reading the book).
- Aspectual Pairs: Most verbs come in pairs (e.g., kupovati vs. kupiti).
