In the fast-paced IT corridors of Chennai, 'Nēram pōtātu' is a constant refrain. It's often paired with 'Coffee' as a survival mechanism. Sri Lankan Tamils might use 'Kāṇātu' instead of 'Pōtātu', but 'Nēram pōtātu' is widely understood due to the influence of Indian Tamil media. In these regions, the phrase is often mixed with English. 'Time பத்தாது' (Time pattātu) is a very common 'Manglish/Singlish' style Tamil expression. In villages, time is often measured by tasks. 'Nēram pōtātu' might refer to the sun setting before the plowing is done.
