Thais often keep offices extremely cold (around 20°C) as a sign of hospitality and status. If you are a guest, saying 'หนาวมากเลย' might prompt them to offer you a scarf or hot tea. In the North, 'winter' is a major festival season. People celebrate the cold by eating 'Khao Jee' (grilled sticky rice) around a fire. 'Nao' here is a positive, festive word. When the temperature in Bangkok drops below 25°C, it is considered a 'cold snap'. People will post 'หนาวมากเลย' with photos of themselves in heavy winter gear as a joke or fashion statement. There is a strong belief that being 'nao' (cold) leads to a 'cold' (pen wat). Thais will often warn you 'Nao mak loei,ระวังเป็นหวัด' (It's very cold, be careful of catching a cold).
