00:00

- Holy cow, there's a lot going on here!

00:14

Hey, it's me Destin, welcome back to Smarter Everyday.

00:16

When you eat today, that's food going to get to your plate

00:20

from field like this, and before it gets in that field,

00:23

it's going to pass through the hand

00:24

and the wallet of a farmer, like this.

00:26

I say wallet, because he has to use something,

00:29

more than likely, called a grain bin.

00:31

Today on Smarter Everyday, we're going to talk about

00:32

the science, the engineering, the economics,

00:35

everything that goes into using a grain bin

00:38

to get food from the field to your plate.

00:40

Trey, is it a really good thing to have a grain bin?

00:42

- It is.

00:43

- Why?

00:44

- Oh, for logistics, and economics' sake.

00:46

It buys you time getting the grain out of the field,

00:48

and hopefully as the winter goes on,

00:50

the bases improves, and you can get

00:52

a higher price for you grain.

00:54

- Today on Smarter Everyday, we're going to talk

00:55

about all that, by building a grain bin,

00:58

and then figuring out how they use these things.

01:00

Let's go get smarter everyday.

01:02

(guitar riff)

01:07

These things are everywhere.

01:09

I've always called them silos, but that's not exactly right.

01:12

Now, it's true, these tall skinny ones are silos.

01:15

They sometimes contain a special type of feed called

01:17

silage for animals, but these short,

01:19

fat ones, those aren't silos.

01:21

Those are called grain bins, and I've been on a quest

01:24

to see if I can everything I can know about them.

01:26

My farmer buddy Trey is also an engineer,

01:28

who went to Arburn University.

01:30

We like to talk about mechanical problems

01:32

he has to solve out on the farm.

01:33

When he told me he was pouring a huge

01:35

concrete pad for a grain bin,

01:37

that he was going to buy, I was intrigued.

01:39

The foundation for this thing was 52 yards of concrete,

01:42

heavily reinforced with steel rebar.

01:44

And the more I thought about the forces

01:46

this thing has to put up with,

01:47

like wind blowing on the side of a huge structure,

01:50

literally tons of grain on the inside,

01:53

the scale of this concrete pad started

01:55

to make more and more sense.

01:56

Trey explained that these things are sold

01:58

as a kit, kits that are engineered

02:00

to be assembled on site, by an expert crew.

02:03

If you had a crew of only three

02:04

people but no crane or tall ladder,

02:07

how would you build this thing?

02:08

It's over 30 feet tall, and weighs several tons.

02:12

The more I thought about this,

02:13

the more I realized that there had to be a simple,

02:15

clever technique that I just didn't know about.

02:17

So, I decided to try to work myself on to one of these crews

02:20

to see what I could learn over several days.

02:22

So, what do you call that tool?

02:24

- Punch.

02:26

- [Destin] Yeah, just using a punch for alignment?

02:28

- Yeah.

02:31

- [Destin] What's your name man?

02:32

- I'm Danny.

02:33

- Danny, I'm Destin man, nice to meet you.

02:34

- Nice to meet you.

02:35

- [Destin] And what was your name?

02:36

- Nicholas.

02:37

- [Destin] Nicholas, nice to meet you, dude.

02:38

- Pleasure.

02:38

- [Destin] Do you guys all over the place doing this?

02:39

- That's all we do, yeah.

02:40

- [Destin] Really?
