Clitic Ordering (Wackernagel's Law)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Czech clitics (short pronouns/particles) must occupy the second position in a sentence, following the first stressed word.

  • Clitics like 'se', 'si', 'mi', 'ho' must follow the first word or phrase.
  • Auxiliary verbs like 'jsem' or 'jsi' also follow the second-position rule.
  • If multiple clitics appear, they follow a strict internal hierarchy (auxiliaries last).

Meanings

Clitics are unstressed words that cannot stand alone at the beginning of a sentence. They must 'cling' to the preceding word.
