Another mistake is using vouloir (to want) when avoir envie de is more appropriate. Je veux manger sounds a bit demanding, like an order. J'ai envie de manger is softer, more like a personal wish. Vouloir is the most obvious one. Je veux un café (I want a coffee) is stronger, more direct.
