पिन डालना

You use this whenever there's a keypad or a digital screen involved. In Hindi, verbs like डालना are incredibly versatile, but with पिन, it’s the standard teammate. You’ll hear it at the supermarket checkout, at the bank, or when your friend is trying to unlock their tablet. Usually, the sentence structure is: [Device/Place] + में (in) + पिन + डालना. For example, अपना पिन डालिए (Please enter your PIN). It’s active, direct, and very functional. Just don't say it too loudly in a bank, or security might think you're helping someone else 'enter' their PIN—which is a whole different legal conversation you don't want to have.

Imagine you're at a mall in Delhi. You’ve found the perfect sneakers. The cashier hands you the card machine. He says, "Sir, पिन डाल दीजिए" (Sir, please enter the PIN). Or think about your younger sibling who changed your phone's lock code. You'd yell, "गलत पिन मत डाल!" (Don't enter the wrong PIN!). In the world of UPI apps like GPay or PhonePe, which are massive in India, you'll constantly see pop-ups or hear people saying, "बस पिन डालना है और पेमेंट हो जाएगी" (Just have to enter the PIN and the payment will be done). This phrase is your best friend in any financial or technical scenario. Use it when you're at the ATM and the person behind you is breathing down your neck. Use it when setting up a new SIM card or a Netflix profile lock. It's perfect for customer service calls too—though usually, they tell you *not* to share it, you still have to डालना it yourself. It’s a 'transactional' phrase in every sense of the word. If there's a flashing cursor and a numeric keypad, this is your go-to verb pair. It's also great for being helpful; if an elderly relative is struggling with a machine, saying "यहाँ पिन डालना है" is the kindest thing you can do.

Don't use पिन डालना for physical safety pins or sewing pins. If you're trying to pin a brooch to your shirt, the verb is usually लगाना (lagānā - to attach/apply). If you use डालना there, people might think you're trying to feed the pin to your shirt, which sounds painful for everyone involved. Also, for long, complex alphanumeric passwords, while डालना is okay, टाइप करना (to type) or पासवर्ड भरना (to fill password) is sometimes preferred. And definitely don't use it for 'pinning' someone down in a wrestling match—that requires a much more aggressive vocabulary.
