§ Don't Confuse 特技 with 趣味 (shumi)

Many learners, especially at the beginner to intermediate levels, often mix up 特技 (tokugi) and 趣味 (shumi). While both relate to things people do, their meanings are distinct. 趣味 refers to a hobby or pastime – something you enjoy doing in your free time, usually for relaxation or personal interest. It doesn't necessarily imply a high level of skill. For example, reading books or going for walks can be a 趣味.

DEFINITION

趣味 (shumi): Hobby; pastime; something you do for enjoyment.

特技, on the other hand, specifically refers to a special skill or talent, something you are particularly good at. It implies a certain level of proficiency or expertise. You might enjoy playing the piano as a 趣味, but if you're a concert pianist, playing the piano could be your 特技.

§ Using 特技 for Everyday Skills

Another common mistake is to use 特技 for very basic or everyday skills that aren't particularly special. For example, being able to cook a simple meal or drive a car are generally not considered 特技 in Japan, unless you're an exceptional chef or a professional race car driver. 特技 implies something out of the ordinary, a notable talent that sets you apart. If you say your 特技 is 'eating quickly,' it might be understood, but it sounds a bit odd because it's not typically seen as a 'special' skill.

• Don't say: 私の特技は料理です。(Unless you are a professional chef or exceptionally good.)

• Better to say: 料理が好きです。(I like cooking.) or 料理が得意です。(I'm good at cooking.)

DEFINITION

得意 (tokui): Good at; strong point; specialty.

得意 (tokui) is a good alternative when you want to express being good at something without necessarily implying it's a 'special skill' in the same way 特技 does. 得意 is more versatile for describing general proficiencies.

§ Overusing or Misusing in Self-Introductions

When introducing yourself in Japanese (自己紹介, jikoshoukai), you might be tempted to list all your skills as 特技. While it's good to share your strengths, be mindful of the nuance. If you're asked about your 特技, it's generally expected that you'll share something genuinely impressive or unique. If you have multiple 'special skills', it's fine to mention a couple, but focus on the ones that are truly outstanding. Avoid listing common hobbies or basic skills that everyone can do.

§ Not Understanding the Context of 'Special'

What constitutes a 'special skill' can also be culturally nuanced. While in some Western contexts, being 'good at karaoke' might be a fun thing to mention, in a Japanese context, unless you have a truly professional-level singing voice or a unique performance style, it might not be seen as a 特技. Focus on skills that demonstrate dedication, unique talent, or a high level of achievement.
