In many Thai homes, washing dishes is a communal activity or a task assigned to children to teach responsibility. It's often done while chatting in the kitchen. Street food vendors often wash dishes in large basins of water right on the sidewalk. It's a testament to the fast-paced, open-air nature of Thai dining. At Thai temples (Wat) during festivals, volunteers often gather to wash hundreds of dishes used by monks and visitors as a way to make merit. When visiting a Thai home, even if the host says 'no', the act of moving toward the sink to wash your own plate is highly respected.
