Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the -di suffix to talk about completed actions you witnessed or know for a fact happened.

  • Add -dı/-di/-du/-dü based on the last vowel of the verb root (e.g., 'gel' -> 'geldi').
  • Change 'd' to 't' if the verb ends in a voiceless consonant (e.g., 'git' -> 'gitti').
  • Add personal endings after the past tense suffix (e.g., 'geldim' for 'I came').
Verb Root + (-dı/-di/-du/-dü) + Personal Suffix 🏁

💡

The 'We' Trap

Always remember that 'We' in the past ends in -k (yaptık), not -uz (yapıyoruz). This is the #1 mistake for beginners.
⚠️

Fıstıkçı Şahap

If a verb ends in f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, or p, you MUST use -tı/-ti/-tu/-tü. 'Git-di' sounds very wrong to a native ear.
🎯

Drop the Pronoun

Since the suffix tells us who did it (geldim = I came), you don't need to say 'Ben'. It sounds more natural to just say the verb.

Smart Tips

Immediately switch the 'D' in your head to a 'T'.

Bak-dı Bak-tı

Use -di for things you remember, but -miş for things your parents told you.

İki yaşında yürümüşüm (I heard I walked at two). Beş yaşında okula başladım (I remember starting school).

Just repeat the verb with the 'I' suffix. You don't need 'Evet'.

Evet, ben yaptım. Yaptım.

발음

git-TİM, gel-DİK

Stress

The stress in the definite past tense is usually on the last syllable of the verb root, just before the suffix.

yap-TI

Consonant Sharpening

The 't' in -ti/-tı is pronounced very sharply and clearly compared to the 'd'.

Falling Intonation

Eve geldim. ↘

A completed statement of fact.

암기하기

기억법

Remember 'Fıstıkçı Şahap' (The Pistachio Seller Shahap). If a verb ends in one of his letters, the 'D' turns into 'T'!

시각적 연상

Imagine a judge hitting a gavel. The sound 'DI!' marks a finished, definite action that is now law/fact.

Rhyme

A, I -> DI. E, İ -> Dİ. O, U -> DU. Ö, Ü -> DÜ. Finished and through!

Story

You walked (gittin) to the market, bought (aldın) an apple, and ate (yedin) it. Each step is a solid, finished block in your day.

Word Web

DünGeçen yılÖnceBittiTamamlandı

챌린지

Write 5 things you did this morning using the -di tense. Check if any verbs end in 'k' or 't' to use the 't' suffix!

문화 노트

While fairy tales use -miş, personal anecdotes that you want people to believe as 100% true use -di. Using -di makes you sound like a more reliable narrator.

Turkish speakers use -di for national history (like 1453) to show that these events are part of their collective certain knowledge, not just 'stories'.

Derived from Old Turkic suffix '-dï', which has been the primary marker for definite past for over a millennium.

En son hangi kitabı okudun?

Çocukken nerede yaşadın?

자주 묻는 질문 (6)

Yes! Historical facts or things you are 100% certain about (like your own birth date) use `-di`.

The `-di` suffix is the past tense marker. Without it, you aren't in the past! The 't' comes from consonant assimilation.

Yes. 'Yaptım' means you know you did it. 'Yapmışım' means you might have done it unconsciously or someone told you that you did it.

No, Turkish is pro-drop. The verb ending `geldim` already tells us it's 'I'.

Nothing special! Just add the suffix. For example, `oku` + `du` = `okudu`.

Yes, for confirmed events. If the news is reporting a rumor, they use -miş.
