Imperfective Stem Formation
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The imperfective stem is used for present and future actions by adding prefixes and suffixes to the root verb.
- Identify the root (e.g., s-b-r for break).
- Add the prefix 'y-' or 't-' based on the person.
- Insert the vowel 'i' after the first root letter.
Meanings
The imperfective stem describes ongoing, habitual, or future actions. It is the foundation for the present continuous and simple future tenses.
Present Continuous
Actions happening right now.
“እሱ ይበላል (He is eating)”
“እሷ ትጠጣለች (She is drinking)”
Simple Future
Actions that will happen later.
“ነገ እመጣለሁ (I will come tomorrow)”
“እሱ ይተኛል (He will sleep)”
Habitual Action
Things done regularly.
“በየቀኑ እሮጣለሁ (I run every day)”
“እሱ በየሳምንቱ ይሠራል (He works every week)”
