Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use this to talk about past actions where the result matters now or the exact time isn't mentioned.
- Combine the present tense of `съм` (to be) with the past active participle (the -л form).
- The participle must match the subject's gender and number (чел, чела, чело, чели).
- Unlike some other Slavic languages, Bulgarian ALWAYS keeps the auxiliary verb in the 3rd person (е/са).

Smart Tips
Use the word `вече` (already) with the Present Perfect to sound like a native.
Flip the order: Participle + съм. Never start with 'Съм'.
Ask yourself: 'Does it matter WHEN it happened?' If no, use Present Perfect.
Double check for the 'е' or 'са'. It's the 'glue' of the sentence.
发音
Clitic Stress
The auxiliary 'съм' is unstressed. The stress falls on the participle.
L-vocalization
In some dialects, the final 'л' might sound like 'у', but in standard Bulgarian, it is a clear 'l'.
Reduction of 'е'
The 3rd person 'е' is very short and almost blends with the following word.
Question Intonation
Била ли си там? ↗
Rising intonation on the 'ли' and the participle to indicate a question.

文化笔记
Bulgarians are very sensitive to whether you saw something happen or not. Using the Present Perfect (with 'е/са') implies you are sure of the fact or see the result. Dropping 'е/са' turns it into a rumor.
On Instagram, the Present Perfect is the 'aesthetic' tense. People use it to show off experiences: 'Пътувала съм', 'Яла съм'.
When visiting a home, the host might use this tense to show they've prepared for you.
The Bulgarian Present Perfect evolved from the Proto-Slavic perfect tense, which used the L-participle and the auxiliary 'to be'.

It's about aspect. `Чел съм` (imperfective) means you have the experience of reading it. `Прочел съм` (perfective) means you have finished it and the result is relevant now.
No! In Bulgarian, omitting 'съм' in the 1st/2nd person is impossible, and omitting 'е/са' in the 3rd person changes the meaning to 'reported speech' (Renarrative).
Because the time when the action happened is not defined or important. The focus is on the fact that it happened at all.
Generally, no. For a sequence of events in a story, use the Past Simple (Aorist). Use Present Perfect for the 'background' or 'results'.
Use `Аз съм бил` (masculine) or `Аз съм била` (feminine).
The auxiliary `съм` is a clitic, meaning it wants to 'lean' on another word. It cannot start a sentence. So, `Бил съм`, not `Съм бил` at the start.
No, in the plural, there is only one form ending in `-ли` for all genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter).
Avoid it when you have specific time words like `вчера` (yesterday), `тогава` (then), or `в 5 часа` (at 5 o'clock).
