Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use this to report future events you haven't witnessed or to distance yourself from a claim.

  • Use the 'L-participle' of 'ще' (щял, щяла, щели) based on the subject's gender.
  • Follow the participle with 'да' and the present tense of the main verb.
  • For negatives, use 'нямало да' regardless of the subject's gender or number.

Always double-check your 3rd person sentences. If you see 'е щял' or 'са щели', delete the 'е' or 'са' immediately to sound like a pro.
⚠️

Don't pluralize 'нямало'

Even if the subject is 'те' (they), the negative form remains 'нямало да'. Never say 'нямали да'.
💬

Sarcasm Tool

Use this tense when you want to show you don't believe someone. It's the linguistic equivalent of rolling your eyes.

Smart Tips

Instead of starting every sentence with 'Те казват, че...', just use the renarrative future. It's more natural and concise.

Те казват, че той ще дойде. Той щял да дойде.

Use 'щяло да' for impersonal events like 'it will be announced' or 'it will rain'.

Ще бъде обявено утре. Щяло да бъде обявено утре.

Repeat the rumor using 'щял/а' with a slightly higher pitch at the end to signal 'Yeah, right!'

Той ще ми даде 100 лева. Той щял да ми даде 100 лева?!

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले सवाल (6)

This is a grammatical marker of the renarrative mood in Bulgarian. Dropping `е` or `са` signals to the listener that the information is reported, not witnessed.

Only if you are being ironic or reporting what someone else said you would do. For example, `Аз съм щял да ходя?` (I'm supposedly going?) expresses surprise at someone else's claim about you.

No, but it's very common with the weather because `времето` (the weather) is neuter. It's used for any neuter subject or impersonal statement.

`Щеше да` is Future in the Past (intentions that failed or were planned). `Щял да` is Renarrative Future (hearsay about the future).

Place `ли` after the participle: `Щял ли да дойде?` (Is he reportedly coming?).

Yes, very much so! Whenever you say 'I heard that...', you should technically use this mood in Bulgarian.
