In Kolkata, you might hear 'Thanks' or 'Thank you' in English just as often as 'Dhonyobad' in casual settings. However, using the Bengali phrase shows a deeper level of cultural integration. In Bangladesh, 'Shukriya' is very common alongside 'Dhonyobad'. If you are in a more religious or traditional environment, 'Shukriya' might feel more warm. In corporate offices in Dhaka or IT hubs in Salt Lake, Kolkata, this phrase is often followed by 'আপনাকে' (to you) to make it 'আপনাকে সাহায্যের জন্য ধন্যবাদ'. In villages, people might not use formal words for thanks. Instead, they might say 'বেঁচে থাকো' (Live long) or 'ভালো থেকো' (Stay well) as a way of showing gratitude.
