Forming the Future: Regular Verbs
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To form the future tense in Armenian, add the suffix -u to the verb stem and use the present tense of 'to be'.
- For -el verbs: take the stem and add -elu (e.g., grel -> grelu em).
- For -al verbs: take the stem and add -alu (e.g., kardal -> kardalu em).
- Negate by adding 'chem' before the verb (e.g., chem grelu).
Meanings
The future tense is used to describe actions that will happen after the current moment. It is formed by combining the participle ending in -lu with the auxiliary verb 'to be'.
Definite Future
Actions planned or certain to occur.
“Վաղը գնալու եմ Երևան։”
“Նա կարդալու է այս գիրքը։”
Intentional Future
Expressing a firm intention to do something.
“Ես աշխատելու եմ այս նախագծի վրա։”
“Նրանք գնելու են նոր տուն։”
Negative Future
Expressing that an action will not take place.
“Ես չեմ գնալու այնտեղ։”
“Մենք չենք ուտելու այդ սնունդը։”

Look at the infinitive. If it ends in 'el', use 'e' in the suffix. If 'al', use 'a'.
