Forming the Present Subjunctive
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The Armenian subjunctive expresses wishes, commands, or possibilities, formed by adding the suffix '-եմ' or '-ամ' to the verb stem.
- Use it after verbs of wishing: 'Ուզում եմ, որ գաս' (I want you to come).
- Use it for indirect commands: 'Ասա, որ գրի' (Tell him to write).
- Use it for purpose clauses: 'Գալիս եմ, որ տեսնեմ' (I am coming so that I may see).
Meanings
The subjunctive mood in Armenian is used to express non-factual events, such as wishes, commands, intentions, or hypothetical situations.
Desire/Will
Expressing what someone wants to happen.
“Ուզում եմ, որ նա գա։”
“Կցանկանայի, որ դու մնայիր։”
Purpose
Explaining the reason for an action.
“Գնում եմ, որ հաց գնեմ։”
“Արագացրու, որ հասցնենք։”
