Review Summary

  • [Noun] を [Verb]
  • [Time/Place] に [Verb]
  • [Place/Tool] で [Verb]
  • [Destination] へ [Movement Verb]

Common Mistakes

You cannot use で with movement verbs to mark a destination. で is for where an action occurs, but movement is 'to' a place.

Wrong: 学校(がっこう)で 行(い)きます (Gakkō de ikimasu)
Correct: 学校(がっこう)に/へ 行(い)きます (Gakkō ni/e ikimasu)

に cannot mark the object you are eating. You must use を for direct objects.

Wrong: 寿司(すし)に 食(た)べます (Sushi ni tabemasu)
Correct: 寿司(すし)を 食(た)べます (Sushi o tabemasu)

If you are performing an action like eating, you must use で to mark the location, not に.

Wrong: レストランに 食(た)べます (Resutoran ni tabemasu)
Correct: レストランで 食(た)べます (Resutoran de tabemasu)
