Vowel Harmony Rules
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Kazakh suffixes change their vowels to match the last vowel of the word they attach to.
- If the last vowel is hard (a, o, u, y), use hard suffixes: 'balalar' (children).
- If the last vowel is soft (ä, ö, ü, i, e), use soft suffixes: 'kölder' (lakes).
- If the word ends in a voiced consonant, use voiced suffixes; if unvoiced, use unvoiced.

Vowel harmony is a phonological process where vowels in a word must share the same 'quality' (hard or soft). It dictates which version of a suffix you choose.
