โทรหา

โทรหา

Call someone

Making a telephone call.

🌍

문화적 배경

The 'Missed Call' culture: In the early 2000s, Thais would 'ยิงเบอร์' (shoot the number/missed call) to save money on minutes, signaling 'call me back' or 'I'm thinking of you'. Today, 'โทรหา' is often preceded by a LINE message. Calling after 6 PM is generally avoided in Thai business culture unless it's an emergency. It's better to 'โทรหา' during office hours. Calling parents is a sign of 'Gatanyoo' (gratitude). A child who doesn't 'โทรหา' their parents regularly might be seen as neglectful. With the rise of the LINE app, many Thais now 'โทรหา' via LINE instead of traditional cellular networks. This is still called 'โทรหา' or 'คอลหา'.

🎯

The 'Pai/Ma' Sandwich

Add 'ไป' (pai) after 'โทร' to sound more native when you are the one calling: 'โทรไปหา'.

⚠️

Avoid 'To'

Never say 'โทรหาถึง' or 'โทรหาไปที่'. Just 'โทรหา' + [Person].
