保管

You usually place the object right after the verb. For example, 保管行李 means to look after luggage. You can also use it as a noun. A 'storage room' is often called a 保管室. It is a very flexible word for physical items. You will see it on signs at gyms or museums. It is also used when handing your phone to a friend.

Use it when the stakes are clear. At a coat check, the staff will 保管 your jacket. If you find a lost wallet, tell the police you will 保管 it until the owner arrives. It works perfectly in professional settings too. A secretary might 保管 important company seals or documents. It sounds reliable and trustworthy.

Don't use 保管 for abstract concepts like secrets or feelings. For secrets, use 保守. Also, don't use it for people. You don't 'safeguard' a baby with 保管; you 'take care' of them with 照顾. It is strictly for physical property and assets. Using it for a person sounds like you are putting them in a locker!

In China, communal living and high-density cities make 'safekeeping' a big deal. Public spaces often have dedicated 保管处 (storage points). There is a strong cultural emphasis on the responsibility of the 'holder.' If you lose something someone gave you to 保管, it is a major loss of face. It implies a lack of reliability in the relationship.

妥善保管 is the most common four-character phrase you will hear. It means to 'keep something properly and safely.' You will see this on every ticket stub and receipt in China. Another one is 保管员, which is the job title for a custodian or storekeeper. It is a humble but respected role.
