Mood for Expressing Subjectivity and Attitude

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Bulgarian verbs change form based on whether you witnessed the action or are just reporting what someone else said.

  • Drop the auxiliary 'е/са' in the 3rd person to show you didn't see it yourself (e.g., 'Той дошъл' vs 'Той е дошъл').
  • Use the 'double-bil' (бил бил) to express extreme skepticism or doubt about a claim.
  • Use the renarrative form for historical events or fairy tales where you weren't an eyewitness.

Avoid 'E' in History

Never use the indicative 'е' for historical events you didn't witness, or you'll sound like a time traveler!

💡

Admirative is your friend

Use 'си бил' to show you are impressed or surprised by someone's skill. It sounds very native!

Smart Tips

Use the renarrative for things your parents told you, but the indicative for things you actually remember.

Perguntas frequentes (8)

It's the grammatical signal that you are not an eyewitness. If you keep it, you are taking personal responsibility for the truth of the statement.

Only if you don't remember them (e.g., when you were a baby or if you were sleepwalking). Otherwise, it sounds like you're having an out-of-body experience!

'Бил' is standard doubt. 'Бил бил' is extreme sarcasm, like saying 'Yeah, as if!'.

No, Bulgarian and Macedonian are the only ones. Russian, Polish, and Serbian use phrases like 'they say' instead.

Use 'щял/щяла/щяло/щели' + 'да' + the verb. For example: 'Той щял да дойде' (They say he will come).

It can be. If someone tells you a fact and you respond with 'бил', you are essentially calling them a liar.

Yes, if you are reporting what a client or another colleague said and you want to remain neutral.

If it's a well-known fact or you witnessed it, use the Indicative (with 'е'). If you're just passing on info, use the Renarrative.
