به جز is used to exclude one or more items from a group. It directly precedes the noun or pronoun being excluded.
همه آمدند به جز سارا. (Everyone came except for Sara.)
It can be used with pronouns. When used with object pronouns, the pronoun comes directly after به جز.
به جز او، کسی نبود. (Except for him, no one was there.)
When a verb follows به جز, it usually implies 'except when' or 'unless'. The verb will be in the subjunctive mood if it expresses a condition or possibility.
من همه چیز می خورم به جز وقتی که گرسنه نیستم. (I eat everything except when I'm not hungry.)
به جز can also introduce a phrase that modifies the main clause, meaning 'in addition to' or 'besides'. This usage is less common for 'except for' and often depends on context.
به جز کار، هیچ کاری ندارم. (Besides work, I have nothing to do.)
It can be combined with other prepositions to form more complex expressions, though this is less frequent. For example, به جز از (be joz az) is sometimes used interchangeably with به جز.
همه رفتند به جز از من. (Everyone left except for me.)
