The state of feeling joy.
Contexto cultural
Happiness is often linked to 'Boun' (merit). When Lao people do good deeds at the temple, they say they feel 'Mī khwam suk' because they have cleansed their mind. It is common to ask 'Mī khwam suk bo?' (Are you happy?) as a way to check in on someone's life, similar to 'How are you?' but deeper. During the Baci ceremony, elders tie white strings around the couple's wrists while chanting blessings for 'khwam suk' and 'khwam charoen' (prosperity). Water is thrown to wash away bad luck and bring 'khwam suk' for the coming year. It's a time of collective joy.
The 'Have' Rule
Always remember: in Lao, you 'have' happiness. If you use 'to be', people will still understand you, but you'll sound like a translation app.
Don't forget 'Khwam'
Without 'khwam', 'suk' means 'cooked'. You don't want to tell your date that you are 'cooked'!
