To be happy

The state of feeling joy.

🌍

문화적 배경

Happiness is often linked to 'Boun' (merit). When Lao people do good deeds at the temple, they say they feel 'Mī khwam suk' because they have cleansed their mind. It is common to ask 'Mī khwam suk bo?' (Are you happy?) as a way to check in on someone's life, similar to 'How are you?' but deeper. During the Baci ceremony, elders tie white strings around the couple's wrists while chanting blessings for 'khwam suk' and 'khwam charoen' (prosperity). Water is thrown to wash away bad luck and bring 'khwam suk' for the coming year. It's a time of collective joy.

💡

The 'Have' Rule

Always remember: in Lao, you 'have' happiness. If you use 'to be', people will still understand you, but you'll sound like a translation app.

⚠️

Don't forget 'Khwam'

Without 'khwam', 'suk' means 'cooked'. You don't want to tell your date that you are 'cooked'!

You can say 'ຂໍໃຫ້ມີຄວາມສຸກໃນປີໃໝ່' (Wish you happiness in the New Year), but the standard greeting is 'ສະບາຍດີປີໃໝ່'.

'ມີຄວາມສຸກ' is an internal emotion (happiness). 'ມ່ວນ' is for external fun (a fun party).

It is neutral and can be used in any context, from a text message to a royal speech.

You say 'ດີໃຈນຳເດີ້' (Dī chai nam der). Using 'ມີຄວາມສຸກ' here sounds a bit stiff.

'Khwam' turns the adjective 'suk' into the noun 'happiness'. It's a grammar rule for abstract concepts.
