The concept of 'về' is central to the Tet Holiday (Lunar New Year). Millions of people 'về quê' (return to their hometown) to visit family graves and gather with relatives. It is the most important 'return' of the year. In the Mekong Delta, 'về' is often pronounced as 'dìa'. It sounds softer and is a hallmark of the regional accent. It is considered polite to say 'Tôi về trước nhé' (I'm heading home first) to your colleagues before leaving, even if it's past closing time, to acknowledge the group. Children are expected to 'thưa' (formally announce) when they 'đi về' to show respect to their elders.
