If you are a movie lover, want to learn how to talk about movies and
describe movies in English language, and how to improve your English language by watching
English movies, then this lesson is for you!
Hello! my name is Maddy from Piece Of Cake English, and in this lesson we're going to
talk about movies. First, we will learn how to describe movies in English language. Then we will
see if movies can actually help you improve your English language and in what ways, and finally,
we will see a review of a movie. So, if you want to talk about movies, the first word you need to
know is genre, genre. Now also pay attention to the pronunciation because many students maybe say
but it's actually Genre. Now what is genre? Genre is basically the style of a movie.
We have many different genres. For example, we have western movies about the American wild west,
we have action movies which are movies with ,you know, uh, action scenes, gunshots ,and you know,
car chases. There are animated movies such as cartoons. there are also Sci-Fi movies.
Sci-Fi stands for Science-Fiction. It's my favorite genre! It's about unrealistic,
unreal things ,you know, it's like Marvel movies or you know DC movies
,These are very imaginary and maybe about the future. We also have comedies,
if you wanna have fun, if you wanna laugh, if you wanna have a fun evening you can watch a comedy
which is quite funny and then we have drama. Well, drama movies are ,you know, they can make you sad,
they can make you feel very emotional, they may be romantic. These are drama movies. So, First thing
you need to know if you want to describe a movie is genre. but what about the second thing? it's
the plot. now what is a plot of a movie? a plot of the movie is actually the series of events
that form the story of the movie. So, if you want to say "I really enjoyed the
movie because the story was good", instead of story you should say plot. "I really enjoyed it
because it had a very good plot", which means a series of events that form the story. The third
word you need to know about a movie is cast. Now, cast is a collective noun meaning all the people,
all the actors and actresses who act and perform in a movie. Altogether, they're called the cast
of the movie. For example ,you can say the movie had a very good cast. It means all the actors and
actresses were very very good, so it had a very good cast, but the plot wasn't really interesting.
You see how you can start talking about movies and describing it by learning these words!
So you might say it had a very good cast but the plot wasn't really interesting, or
the other way around, the plot was amazing but ,you know, the cast didn't perform very well.
Personally, whenever I want to watch a movie, I check the cast list. The cast list is a list of
all the actors and actresses who perform in a movie. Now, I always check the cast list to see
the members of the cast. "Members of the cast" are the individual actors and actresses who are
performing in the movie. So, cast refers to all the people in the movie, cast list is a list of
names showing who acts in this movie, and members of the cast are actually actors and actresses. One
movie that I watched about a year ago was "Once upon a time in Hollywood". Now, I really recommend
this movie because the cast is very strong. It has a very strong cast, however, in my opinion
the plot was weak and very boring. I didn't like the story. There was no point in the movie.
The next word you need to know to describe a movie is "character". Now, a character is an individual
