제가 27살 때
경영 컨설팅이라는 힘든 일을 그만두고
좀 더 어려운 일을 시작했는데 바로 교직입니다.
뉴욕시의 공립 학교에서 중학교 1학년들에게
수학을 가르치기 시작했어요.
많은 선생님들이 그렇듯, 퀴즈나 시험지도 만들고
숙제도 내줬어요.
그리고 아이들이 숙제를 제출하면 점수를 매겼죠.
놀라웠던 것은 성적이 좋은 학생들과 성적이 나쁜 학생들의 차이점은
단지 아이큐가 아니었어요.
가장 우수한 학생들 중 일부는
아이큐가 엄청나게 높은 게 아니었습니다.
그리고 아이큐가 높은 학생들 모두가 성적이 좋은 것도 아니었죠.
저는 그때 깨달았어요.
중학교 1학년들이 배워야 하는 수학은
비율, 십진법, 평행사변형의 넓이 구하기 등등
물론 매우 어렵습니다.
하지만 배우기에 불가능한 것은 아니고
제가 지도하는 모든 학생들이
열심히 그리고 꾸준히 공부하기만 한다면
교과 내용을 다 이해하고 배울 수 있다고 확신했어요.
몇년간의 교직 생활을 하면서 내린 결론은,
현재 교육에 있어서 우리에게 필요한것은
