이치

ichi

When you use 이치 (ichi), you're talking about the underlying logic or principle of something. It's about why things are the way they are, or how they logically should be. Think of it as the 'reason' or 'sense' behind an action, statement, or situation. It helps to explain if something makes logical sense or is consistent with common understanding. For example, if someone does something that seems unfair, you might question the 이치 of their actions.

When Koreans say '이치에 맞다' (ichi-e matda), they're basically saying 'that makes sense' or 'that's logical.' You'll hear this a lot in daily conversation.

For example, if someone gives a really good reason for something, you can say, '그 말은 이치에 맞네요' (geu mareun ichi-e matneyo). It's a useful phrase for agreeing with someone's reasoning.

You can also use '이치에 맞지 않다' (ichi-e matji anta) to say something doesn't make sense or isn't logical.

For instance, if a plan has a clear flaw, you might say, '그 계획은 이치에 맞지 않아요' (geu gyehoek-eun ichi-e matji anayo).
