Human Classifiers
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Thai, you must use a specific classifier word when counting people; use 'คน' (khon) for general people.
- Use 'คน' (khon) for general people: 'เพื่อน 2 คน' (two friends).
- Use 'ท่าน' (than) for respected people: 'อาจารย์ 1 ท่าน' (one teacher).
- Use 'รูป' (rup) for monks: 'พระ 3 รูป' (three monks).
Meanings
Thai uses classifiers (measure words) to categorize nouns when they are counted or specified. For humans, the classifier acts as a bridge between the noun and the quantity.
General Human
Used for friends, family, strangers, and general people.
