Pronoun & Adverb Changes in Reported Speech
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When reporting speech, shift pronouns and time/place adverbs to match the new perspective of the speaker.
- Change pronouns: 'I' becomes 'he/she' (আমি -> সে).
- Change time: 'Today' becomes 'that day' (আজ -> সেই দিন).
- Change place: 'Here' becomes 'there' (এখানে -> ওখানে).

Meanings
This rule governs how we adjust pronouns and adverbs when reporting what someone else said in the past.
Pronoun Shift
Adjusting personal pronouns to reflect the reporter's perspective.
“সে বলল, 'আমি খাব।' -> সে বলল যে সে খাবে।”
“তুমি বললে, 'আমি যাব।' -> তুমি বললে যে তুমি যাবে।”
Adverbial Shift
Adjusting time and place markers to reflect the distance from the original event.
“সে বলল, 'আমি আজ আসব।' -> সে বলেছিল যে সে সেই দিন আসবে।”
“সে বলল, 'আমি এখানে আছি।' -> সে বলেছিল যে সে সেখানে আছে।”
