Tense Changes in Reported Speech
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When reporting what someone said in the past, shift the verb tense one step further into the past.
- Present Simple becomes Past Simple: 'আমি খাই' (I eat) becomes 'সে বলেছিল যে সে খেত' (He said he ate).
- Present Continuous becomes Past Continuous: 'আমি যাচ্ছি' (I am going) becomes 'সে বলেছিল যে সে যাচ্ছিল' (He said he was going).
- Past Simple becomes Past Perfect: 'আমি খেয়েছি' (I ate) becomes 'সে বলেছিল যে সে খেয়েছিল' (He said he had eaten).

Meanings
This rule governs how verb tenses change when we report someone's words after the fact. It ensures the timeline of the original statement is preserved relative to the time of reporting.
Direct to Indirect
