Using बंद करना is as easy as ordering a chai. You just take the object you want to close and add the phrase after it. For example, to close a door, you say दरवाज़ा बंद करना. In modern life, this applies to your tech too. Want to close an app? App बंद करो. Want to shut your laptop? Laptop बंद करो. It follows standard Hindi grammar rules for 'do-verbs'. If you are giving a command to a friend, use बंद करो. For someone you respect, use बंद कीजिए. It is a 'transitive' phrase, meaning it always needs an object. You can't just say "I am closing" without saying what you are closing. Unless you're a shopkeeper in a movie dramatically closing for the last time.

Imagine you are in a Delhi Uber and the AC is too cold. You say, "Bhaiya, AC बंद कर दीजिए." Or you are texting a friend who won't stop sending memes. You might jokingly type, "Ab बंद भी करो!" (Now stop it already!). On Instagram, you might see a shop post a story saying, "We are बंद for today." In a professional Zoom call, if someone's mic is making noise, the host might say, "Mute button बंद कीजिए" (though they usually just say 'Mute karo'). If you want to say 'to lock', use ताला लगाना. बंद करना just means shut, not necessarily locked. It's the difference between a guest walking in and a thief staying out. For finishing a task, पूरा करना (to complete) is your best friend. Use it to sound more like a pro.

In slang, you might hear किरकिरी बंद करो which means 'stop the annoying talk'. दुकान बंद करना is also a common idiom for someone losing their influence or power. You might hear people say पैकअप करना (borrowed from English film sets) when they are finishing work for the day. In very formal Hindi, you might see निलंबित करना for 'suspending' or 'closing' something temporarily. But 99% of the time, बंद करना will save your life. It's the Swiss Army knife of Hindi verbs. It even works for 'closing' a gap or a distance. दूरी बंद करना means to get closer to someone.

It's neutral. You can use it with your grandma or your bank manager. Does it mean 'to lock'? Not specifically, but usually, if you close a shop, people assume you locked it too.
