Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the particle 'ເດ' (de) or 'ແຕ່' (tae) to highlight a contrast between two ideas or to challenge an assumption.

  • Use 'ເດ' at the end of a question to ask 'what about...?' (ເຈົ້າເດ? - What about you?)
  • Use 'ແຕ່' to introduce a direct contrast (ຂ້ອຍມັກກາເຟ ແຕ່ລາວມັກຊາ - I like coffee, but he likes tea).
  • Use 'ກໍ' (ko) to emphasize 'also' or 'even' in contrastive contexts (ຂ້ອຍກໍໄປ - I am going too).
